Metabasis Therapeutics, Inc. is a San Diego-based biopharmaceutical
company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization
of novel therapies to address some of the world's most widespread
and costly chronic diseases. Metabasis has a broad product pipeline
targeting large markets with significant unmet medical needs. We are
specifically focused on metabolic diseases involving pathways to the
liver, such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia, as well as liver diseases
such as hepatitis and liver cancer. We currently have four internally
discovered product candidates in clinical development as well as an
active discovery team seeking additional product candidates to treat

Head
of Intellectual Property
Job Code # 07-108
This position will oversee and direct the patent and intellectual
property function, including outside counsel, internal patent agents
and patent attorneys as appropriate. Responsibilities may include
overseeing the preparation, processing and filing of: patent applications,
trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, licensing and research agreements,
publications and intellectual property aspects of contracts and agreements.
Advises and informs senior management of patent prosecution matters.
Primary duties include:
- Devise strategy for generation and maintenance of company's
intellectual property portfolio
- Make recommendations regarding timing of filing, content of
applications, handling of office actions, what countries to file
in and when to pursue or abandon applications
- Write patent applications based on technical input from scientists
- Files applications, either directly with patent agencies or
via outside counsel
- Interview Patent Examiners when appropriate to expedite allowance
of pending applications
- Provide Management with reports on scheduled basis as to status
of all pending applications
- Chair the Patent Committee and obtain approval for payment of
annuities and/or dropping of IP protection in various areas
- Provide direction to patent agencies, outside counsel and foreign
associates to ensure applications are prosecuted in a timely fashion
- Oversee the maintenance of a patent prosecution docketing system
for all US, PCT and foreign applications
- Maintain an awareness of PTO rule changes and alert management
as to potential impact on pending prosecution
Qualified candidates will possess:
- JD, plus MS (Ph.D. preferred) in a scientific discipline (organic
chemistry preferred)
- 8+ years experience writing and prosecuting patents with emphasis
on small molecule pharmaceuticals
- Registration to practice before the USPTO
- Membership with the CA State Bar is a strong plus
- Ability to communicate complex ideas with individuals for whom
English is a second language
Clinical
Scientist / Director Clinical Development
Job Code # 08-034
Located in either La Jolla, CA or Ann Arbor, MI this position
will participate at a high level in all aspects of clinical development
and study management including providing scientific and/or logistical
support to planned and ongoing trials. Specific duties include:
- Participating in the development and maintenance of Clinical
Development Plans (Phase 1, 2 & 3)
- Creating clinical study designs
- Assisting with protocol feasibility assessments for global studies
- Participating in the selection, training and oversight of Contract
Research Organizations (CROs), investigators, and vendors.
- Participating in the development of a patient recruitment/retention
strategy.
- Developing clinical trial synopses; presenting at Clinical Protocol
Review (CPR) meetings.
- Reviewing Statistical Analysis Plans
- Managing the ongoing review of available safety data with the
medical monitor.
- Reviewing all databases (clinical, laboratory, etc.) leading
to the final database lock
- Participating at Investigators Meetings
- Participating in preparation of regulatory filings and for regulatory
meetings and interactions
- Managing clinical sections of IND Annual Reports.
Qualified candidates will possess:
- PhD, PharmD, or MD and 4 years experience in the pharmaceutical
industry; or MS and 8 years experience; therapeutic area experience
in diabetes or hyperlipidemia highly desirable.
- Highly proficient with Good Clinical Practices standards and
Food and Drug Administration regulations relating to clinical
trials.
Senior
IT Support Technician
Job Code # 08-041
This position will help install, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot
network, hardware and software related issues. Specific duties include:
- Provide local and remote user support (telephone, mobile, email,
voicemail, etc.), while ensuring timely and courteous technical
support, and implementation of departmental standards.
- Document the workflow process, from request to solution and
follow up, for various network/hardware/software systems.
- Train end users on software applications and responds to issues
that arise.
- Troubleshoot computer, phone, and network problems.
- Install/configure hardware/software upgrades.
- Diagnose and repair PCs, maintains and installs network cabling,
and lend support to the IT Department in performing special projects.
- Develop methodology for, and perform bulk installs on desktops
and laptops.
Qualified candidates will possess:
- AA in a computer related field or equivalent and 3 years related
experience
- Strong technical knowledge of Windows Desktop Operating Systems,
including Windows 2000/XP Professional/Vista. Working knowledge
of Linux/UNIX a plus.
- Extensive user applications support experience with Microsoft
Office Professional suite, Outlook, Adobe, FTP, VPN, Windows Script,
Anti-Virus, and Anti-Spam. Working knowledge of vertical biotech/pharmaceutical
scientific user apps a plus.
- Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols,
and standards, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, SNMP, SMTP, Fiber,
SAN storage, Video conferencing, Switches, and Wireless. Working
knowledge of PBX/ VIOP systems a plus.
- Strong hands-on computer hardware troubleshooting experience.
- Microsoft MCP required
- Cisco CCNA and Network + preferred
